Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 presidential race, marking a dramatic return to Kenya’s political arena after a stint abroad.
Speaking at a packed Gusii Stadium on Friday, Matiang’i received a thunderous welcome from thousands of supporters and a coalition of leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties.
The event, styled as a homecoming, also served as the launchpad for his presidential ambitions.
“For ten years, I worked tirelessly for this country. I am known to be a good worker, and if given the chance, I am ready to work for Kenyans,” he said to resounding cheers.
“We have many challenges—let’s not pretend. Let’s not be divided and end up destroying our country. We must remain hopeful and united.”
Matiang’i revealed that while working overseas, he received numerous messages from concerned Kenyans urging him to return and offer leadership.
“They asked me to come back home prepared to run for the presidency. I now assure you that I am ready for the job,” he declared.
He confirmed plans to resign from his position in the US to fully focus on his campaign.
His entry into the race has energised the political landscape, particularly in the Gusii region, where he enjoys broad support.
The meet-the-people tour, which began in Kijauri and moved through several towns including Keroka, Keumbu, and Kisii, drew enthusiastic crowds chanting “Ruto Must Go.”
Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who accompanied Matiang’i to the stadium, endorsed his bid. “We have been despised when it comes to government appointments. I had to make noise for us to be given a single Principal Secretary position,” said Arati.
Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and UPA leader Governor Amos Nyaribo also backed Matiang’i, fuelling speculation about a growing opposition alliance.
Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni and several ODM MPs added their voices, calling on Matiang’i to now take his message nationwide.
“The one that we have chosen is our son called Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i,” said Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka. “We love Kenya… and we want a country that is fair.”
Matiang’i’s campaign is expected to expand in the coming weeks as he tours other parts of the country to rally national support.
