The National Assembly has approved the nomination of Douglas Kanja as Inspector General of police. He now await formal appointment by President William Ruto.
Kanja will take up the position from former IG Japheth Koome who tendered his resignation on July 12, 2024.
He will assume the position of IG, at a time when the office of IG is under heavy scrutiny, with the current acting inspector general Gilbert Masengeli facing prison time over disobedience of court orders.
Masengeli was last week on Friday sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court, after the acting IG failed to honour summons to appear before the court.
High court judge Lawrence Mugambi ordered the acting IG to surrender himself to the commissioner general of prisons to begin his sentencing and also asked cabinet secretary for interior Kithure Kindiki to ensure that Masengeli served the sentence.
