Members of the Murang’a County Assembly (MCAs) on Tuesday dedicated the morning sitting to honouring their late colleague, Mark Gicheru Wainaina, who passed away last week while receiving treatment in a Nairobi hospital.
Wainaina, a nominated member of the County Assembly, died on 13th November 2024, leaving behind a significant legacy of service to his community and the county at large.
The Speaker’s message, read by his Deputy, Moses Gachui, conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Members and staff of the Assembly to Wainaina’s family, friends, and all who knew him.
The Deputy Speaker stated, “The Honourable Speaker, Members, and staff of the Assembly joined the people of Murang’a in mourning the death of Mark Gicheru Wainaina, Nominated Member of the County Assembly. My encouragement to you is that you find comfort and fortitude to withstand this tragic loss.”
Gachui went on to praise Wainaina for his contributions to the county, particularly highlighting his work as a passionate advocate for climate change and ICT issues. He also noted the late MCA’s tireless efforts in advocating for the rights and development of persons living with disabilities.
“Under his tenure as Chairperson of the Committee on Delegation Legislation, Wainaina spearheaded the adoption of the County Land Allocation and Leases Management Regulations,” Gachui added.
Nominated MCA Sharleen Wambui, also Chairperson of the Assembly’s Youth and Culture Committee, expressed that Murang’a had lost a noble and incredible man who fought for the youth both in the Assembly and across the county.
Wambui emphasised Wainaina’s significant role in the establishment of the Murang’a Youth Service, which provided employment opportunities for young people in the county. “He was loved by many for his noble character,” she said.
Muguru MCA Moses Muchiri also paid tribute, describing Wainaina as a great leader and scholar, taken too soon. “I thank the Lord for the few years you were given to serve humanity, and may the Almighty God comfort your family during these trying moments,” Muchiri said. He added that Wainaina’s soul may rest in eternal peace.
Kakuzi/Mitubiri MCA Steven Muigai shared his sadness, reflecting on the loss of a close friend who was honest and promising. “It is a lesson to learn that we are all mortal beings,” he said, recalling Wainaina’s involvement in the UDA Secretariat.
Ithanga MCA Alex Ndunda remembered Wainaina as a hardworking man with a vision and a friend to many. “He will be remembered for his commitment and contributions to the county,” Ndunda said.
Mark Wainaina will be laid to rest on 23rd November 2024 at his home in Kirogo Village, Wangu Ward, Murang’a County. Rest in peace, Mark Wainaina.
