Police sources have disclosed a stunning revelation concerning murder suspect Kelvin Kang’ethe’s escape from Muthaiga Station.
Kang’ethe, accused of killing Kenyan nurse Margaret Mbitu at a US-based airport last year, meticulously escaped police custody and disappeared in the busy streets of Nairobi.
A man claiming to be Kang’ethe’s lawyer paid the suspect a visit on Wednesday afternoon, engaging in a brief session, according to a police report seen by Nairobi Law Monthly before his breakout.
Under the guise of a routine attorney visit, the police granted the man’s request to see Kang’ethe. Following protocol, officers escorted the suspect from his cell to the Anti-Crime office, where they left the two men alone.
Shortly after, Kang’ethe took the opportunity to flee the office, leaving the lawyer behind. The report indicates Kang’ethe made his escape during a meeting chaired by the station’s commanding officer, with all anti-crime personnel and members of the inspectorate present.
Officers engaged Kang’ethe in a pursuit along Thika Superhighway but the suspect eluded capture, outmaneuvering them in the process.
Police arrested and placed four officers and the self-proclaimed lawyer in custody, recording statements to ascertain their involvement in Kang’ethe’s escape.
Kang’ethe, 41, was arrested last week leaving a Nairobi club after an extensive manhunt by Kenyan and US authorities.
Granted a 30-day detention period pending extradition, authorities accuse Kang’ethe of murdering his girlfriend in October last year, leaving her body in a car at Boston Logan International Airport before fleeing to Kenya.
Margaret Mbitu’s family revealed she had intended to end her relationship with Kang’ethe before her tragic demise. The 30-year-old Kenyan-American nurse left her workplace on October 30 last year and was reported missing the same day. Her body was discovered two days later.
Security footage linked Kang’ethe to the crime scene, capturing him leaving the airport parking lot the morning after Mbitu’s disappearance.
