The newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Erastus Edung Ethekon, alongside six commissioners, were officially sworn into office today in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court.
Chief Justice Martha Koome administered the oath of office to the team, just one day after a bench of three High Court judges cleared their appointments.
The court quashed a previous Gazette Notice dated June 10, 2025, issued by President William Ruto, and directed that a new Gazette Notice be issued to regularize their appointments. This step paved the way for the swearing-in ceremony.
The commissioners joining Chairperson Ethekon are Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah. The team is set to serve a six-year term.

In its ruling, the court clarified that recommendations from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report do not apply to the selection, nomination, and appointment process of the IEBC Chairperson and commissioners.
The commission has faced challenges in conducting by-elections in several constituencies and wards that have lacked representation due to various vacancies, including deaths of officeholders.
The IEBC’s incomplete composition following the departure of previous commissioners had stalled the legally mandated by-election processes, which require filling vacant seats within 90 days.
With the new team now sworn in, the IEBC is expected to move swiftly to address these pending electoral processes and strengthen its mandate ahead of upcoming electoral events.
