The police officer who shot an unarmed mask vendor during the demonstrations held in Nairobi on 17 June 2025 has been arrested.

The incident, which occurred during protests over the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody, sparked outrage after a masked police officer was captured on multiple videos shooting the vendor at close range, striking him in the face.

The victim, a well-known mask vendor in the area, was left bleeding heavily from the head and collapsed in front of shocked protesters and journalists.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the National Police Service (NPS) said it had been following the incident, and the Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja, had ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the officer.

“Following this incident, the Inspector-General, National Police Service, has ordered the immediate arrest, investigation, and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested,” the NPS statement read.

The NPS also condemned a group of thugs armed with crude weapons, stating that such individuals would be subjected to the full force of the law.

“Furthermore, NPS has noted a group of goons armed with crude weapons in today’s protests within the CBD. The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law. Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly,” the statement added.
