The government has unveiled an ambitious plan to resolve the perennial traffic congestion in the capital Nairobi, which has cost residents millions of shillings daily in wasted hours sitting in traffic.

The Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Programme is expected to benefit more than 4.3 million people.

Speaking during a meeting with US investors on Thursday, President William Ruto said the initiative will also help tackle the economic growth challenges related to urban land use and planning in the Nairobi metropolitan.

“This programme is about delivering results and unlocking greater opportunities for Kenyans,” he said.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation CEO Alice Albright was present in the event that took place in Washington, D.C.

“This is an exciting milestone in the growing partnership between Kenya and the United States,” said President Ruto.

Dr. Ruto, at the same time, asked the US to spearhead a plan that will get countries out of the debt distress.

He said America should double its contribution to available concessional financing under the World Bank’s IDA programme. This, he noted, will help in tackling global challenges that divert resources from development to debt.

He spoke on Thursday during a joint press conference with his host President Joe Biden at the White House.

President Biden said the U.S. will champion reforms of the global financial system.

“Failing to do so immediately places freedom, democracy and security under threat,” said President Biden.
