Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition leader, Raila Odinga, has dismissed reports that he has endorsed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on behalf of Odinga, his spokesperson Dennis Onyango clarified that the recent praise for Kalonzo should not be misinterpreted as a declaration of the coalition’s position for the 2027 elections, which are still four years away.
“Mr Odinga, therefore, clarifies that his praise for H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka… was not an endorsement of Mr Musyoka as the Azimio presidential candidate in 2027,” the statement clarified.
Raila affirmed that the coalition believes in providing an equal opportunity for all aspiring presidential candidates and will only announce its candidate a year or so before the 2027 elections.
According to the statement, Odinga expressed confidence in Kalonzo’s ability to contend with Hon. William Ruto in a free and fair presidential competition.
“Mr Odinga further assures Azimio supporters and the country that he plans to remain very active in party and national politics all the way to 2027.”
This clarification came in response to Odinga’s accusations during a recent event, where he accused President Ruto of falsely speculating on Kalonzo’s candidacy in 2027 in an attempt to divide the coalition.
Odinga emphasized that they would stand with the Wiper leader, stating, “We will show him he knows nothing; we will stand with Kalonzo because he is an honest person.”
In October, President Ruto had claimed that Odinga owed him a political debt and suggested that Odinga should vote for him in the 2027 General Elections if he was not running, alongside Kalonzo Musyoka.
