Other related events held to raise funds for Rhino Ark include the Athi 4×4 Challenge, the Quattro Charge (a 4×4 trials event) and the Hog Charge (a children’s mountain bike race) as well as the UK Rhino Charge.
1. UK Rhino Charge
A partner event, the UK Rhino Charge, is held every year in September in Pippingford Park, East Sussex in the United Kingdom. It is neither as big nor as arduous as its’ big brother’ in Kenya because of environmental constraints and the choice of 4×4 events in the UK though it does allow all types of 4×4 and entrants from enthusiastic novices to hardened experts to enjoy a very different type of day out in the country.
The venue in the UK is not kept secret like the Kenyan one.
Catering is provided on site and a barbeque is organised to refuel the competitors, their supporters and the marshals after the event while scores are added up and everyone awaits the prize-giving.
2. HOG CHARGE
Started in 1998, the Hog Charge was Kenya’s first national mountain bike competition. It is a charity event that raises money to help Rhino Ark’s conservation work, which focuses on the water towers of Mt Kenya and Mau Eburu ecosystems as well as maintenance of the historic 400-km Aberdare Ecosystem electric fence. The 16th Annual Hog Charge held this year raised Sh3,090,734 for Mark Tilbury of Car 35 (Hog Charge Team) as sponsorship for his Rhino Charge entry.
Since inception, the Hog Charge has raised a total of Sh36 million for Rhino Ark. It is the brainchild of Mark Tilbury, who drives Car 35 – ‘The Hog Charge Team’ – in the annual Rhino Charge. The event is hosted and organised by Peponi School and the main sponsor is Brookside Dairy Ltd.
3. RHINO CHARGE RAFFLE
The Rhino Charge Raffle was introduced in 2002 as a tool to assist Rhino Charge entrants with their fund-raising and to thank competitor sponsors for their support. One ticket represents Sh 2,000 worth of sponsorship and teams issue the tickets to sponsors in return for the amount given. Volunteers on the Rhino Charge Raffle work towards securing prizes from over 100 donors, including airlines and hoteliers.
