Portugal were crowned UEFA Nations League champions after beating Iberian neighbours Spain 5-3 on penalties in the final at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on Monday.
Álvaro Morata missed his penalty for Spain, handing Portugal their second Nations League triumph.
Cristiano Ronaldo helped inspire Portugal to twice come from behind to beat Spain on penalties in the Nations League final. Ronaldo, who scored the winning goal against Germany in the semi-final, bagged his country’s second equaliser against Spain to seal a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes.
However, Ronaldo then suffered an injury and had to watch as his teammates edged a dramatic shootout, helping him lift his third international title.
Spain had twice taken the lead in the first half, with Martín Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal scoring either side of a Nuno Mendes strike. Nuno Mendes then assisted Ronaldo to level the scores after an hour, while also keeping Lamine Yamal quiet for long spells. Ruben Neves scored the decisive penalty after Morata’s effort was saved by Diogo Costa.
Portugal became the first national team to win the UEFA Nations League twice.
Ronaldo was in tears as his team lifted the trophy. “Winning for Portugal is always special,” Ronaldo told Sport TV. “I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. It’s tears. It’s duty done and a lot of joy.”
Sadly, the match was marred by the death of a fan late in the game, after the spectator fell from the second-tier seats at the Allianz Arena.
