President William Ruto has assigned Prime Cabinet CS Musalia Mudavadi the additional responsibility of overseeing the Foreign Affairs Ministry, in a vertical transfer of roles previously delegated to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In March 2023, President Ruto assigned Gachagua various foreign policy roles, including direct interactions with international organizations and government departments. These responsibilities will now be handled by Mudavadi.

Prior to this change, it was the exclusive purview of the Foreign Affairs Ministry to manage Kenya’s relationships with foreign missions and organizations.

This adjustment is seen by many as a strategic political move, possibly positioning Mudavadi as a key player in President Ruto’s administration, with rumours of him being considered as a potential running mate in the 2027 elections.

Mudavadi embraces change

Several factors, including competing interests in government tenders, internal disputes among Cabinet Secretaries, and reports from the National Intelligence Service, are believed to have influenced President Ruto’s decision.

In response to this development, Musalia Mudavadi expressed his gratitude and commitment to his new role. He stated, “I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been entrusted by His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto with an expanded role in the reshuffled Cabinet.”

He added, “I express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency for the trust placed in me by assigning me the additional vital role of the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.”

Mudavadi also emphasized his dedication to safeguarding the interests of Kenyans both within the country and abroad in his new capacity.

This move marks a significant transition, with Mudavadi taking over responsibilities previously held by Alfred Mutua, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.
