Makueni Senator Daniel Maanzo has filed a censure motion against President William Ruto in the Senate over alleged failure to protect Kenyans and address urgent interests of the nation.
The motion by Mr Maanzo brings to the fore several crucial matters, including Ruto’s failure as Chairperson of the NSC to act on police brutality and abductions.
He criticizes the Kenya Kwanza administration for lacking proper public participation in major state projects, including the Social Health Insurance Fund-SHIF, the Adani controversy, the Higher Education Funding model, and the Affordable Housing program.
“Further concerned that the constitutional violations by President William Ruto have alienated segments of the population and polarized Kenyans on account of the exclusion of public participation in SHIF, SHA and the university funding model,” adds the senator.

Mr Maanzo also accuses Ruto of undermining the principles of devolution by failing to ensure timely fund disbursement to counties, a factor that has heavily impacted service delivery.
Mr Maanzo’s motion comes in the wake of a similar move by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, who moved a censure motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over claims of fanning ethnic sentiments in his utterances.
Although censure motions disapprove some acts or conduct of an officeholder, they do not constitute an impeachment, meaning the removal of a person from office. A censure motion may be debated and pass by a majority vote of the Senate.
