Several members of Parliament from Tanzania were on Friday injured after they were involved in a road accident while traveling to Mombasa for the East Africa Community Parliamentary Games.

The MPs, according to a statement issued by the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, sustained injuries after their bus collided with a lorry early on Friday, December 6, 2024.

According to the details shared by the Speaker and the National Assembly, the accident is said to have occurred in Mbande area, Kongwa District, Dodoma Region.

“One bus carrying some of our colleagues from Tanzania was involved in an accident. We have no fatalities, but some injuries and have been taken to hospital and are being attended to,” Wetang’ula said.

“You will get better information once we get to Mombasa and this team of leaders who are involved in the management of the games will be able to appraise you. And we wish a quick recovery to those who have sustained various injuries,” he added.

Wetang’ula made the statement shortly after Alego Usonga MP Samwel Atandi confirmed the incident during a media address at the Nairobi Railway Terminus.

“We have received information that members of the Tanzanian team were involved in a road accident, and some MPs have sustained injuries. Among those injured are football players from their delegation,” he stated.

Atandi extended heartfelt well-wishes to the injured MPs, wishing them a swift recovery.

“Our thoughts are with our colleagues who are currently receiving treatment in hospital. On behalf of the Kenyan delegation, I want to send them messages of sympathy and solidarity,” he said.

The EAC Parliamentary Games serve as an annual gathering of legislators from member states, promoting regional harmony through sports and friendly competition.

Updates on the condition of the injured MPs and the progress of these games will be provided as they become available.
