The Teachers Service Commission has announced new vacancies for intern teachers for both Junior Secondary Schools and Primary Schools.

The commission, in a job advertisement published on Wednesday, said that it intends to recruit about 20,000 intern teachers, out of which 18,000 will be attached to Junior Secondary Schools and the remaining 2,000 sent to Primary Schools.

TSC says that successful candidates will be attached to various schools across the country, in an internship programme that is set to run for about 12 months in the new financial year.

Equally, those attached to Primary Schools will be paid at least Sh15,000 monthly stipend, while those in Junior Secondary Schools will earn a monthly stipend of about Sh20,000.

The commission says that the programme targets teachers who have since been registered but are still unemployed. The interns, according to the commission, will therefore be mentored and exposed to teaching experiences to improve their skills and help them learn.

“All interested candidates are required to make online applications through the official website,” the commission said.

The announcement by TSC comes at a time when the National Treasury has already hinted at increasing allocations to the commission in the new financial year to help with staffing and the recruitment of additional teachers.

The 2023/24 Financial Year budget statement released by Treasury cabinet secretary Prof Njuguna Ndung’u last month, shows that the ministry of education is one of the biggest beneficiaries in this year’s budget with an allocation of about Sh630 billion.

Of these funds, about Sh25.5 billion will go towards the junior secondary school capitation, some Sh30 billion towards the Higher Education Loans Board and a further Sh5 billion to the School Feeding Programme.

The higher allocation, according to the government, is aimed at promoting equity in the education sector by providing accessible and quality education to all Kenyans.

And in its advertisement, TSC says that to qualify for the programme, one must be a Kenyan citizen, a holder of at least a diploma in education with a minimum mean Grade of C+ (plus) and C+ (plus) in two teaching Subjects in KCSE or its equivalent and must also be a registered teacher with Teachers Service Commission.

It further adds that for one to qualify, they must be currently unemployed and have not previously been employed by the Commission as an intern or on permanent and pensionable terms.

“Candidates will be required to present original academic and professional certificates. Successful candidates will be required to have Personal Accident Insurance to cover for personal risks during the internship period. All submissions should be made before July 18, 2023 ,” the commission said.

“Selection of Candidates will strictly be on merit and based on the number of vacancies per County. Successful candidates will be posted to serve at any primary or junior secondary school in the county where they were interviewed or in any part of the Country where the vacancy exists,” it added.
