Jackson Kimeu Mulinge 1923-2014

Undoubtedly Kenya’s most decorated soldier yet. Jackson Kimeu Mulinge, the former head of the country’s military, died last month after a long struggle with ill-health. He was 91.

He became the Chief of the General Staff in 1978, having joined the military in 1945 as an officer in the King’s African Rifles. Twice, in 1971 and 1982, he crushed military plots against the government.

He joined politics in 1986 after retiring from politics. The then President Daniel arap Moi named him Minister for Lands thereafter.
