Nominated Senator Veronica Maina has replaced Nakuru Senator Tabitha Keroche as Deputy Senate Majority Leader after the Senate Majority Party voted to remove Keroche from the post.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi formally announced the change to the House on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, saying he had verified the documents submitted by the party in line with the Senate Standing Orders.
“I have verified the correspondence received and hereby communicate that the Majority Party has effected a change in the Office of the Deputy Senate Majority Leader. The new office holder, with immediate effect, is Sen. Veronica Maina,” Kingi said.
The decision was made at a Majority Party meeting on Tuesday, November 3, where senators from the ruling coalition passed a resolution removing Keroche and elected Maina in her place.
Kingi told the House that he had received a letter dated November 3 from Senate Majority Whip David Wakoli informing him of the changes, along with the minutes of the meeting and a signed list of the senators who backed the resolution.
“The correspondence and the attached minutes indicate that a resolution was passed by the Majority Party to remove the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Tabitha Keroche, in accordance with Standing Order 22(5),” the Speaker said.
He added that Maina had been elected to the post at the same meeting under Standing Order 22(6). Maina will now deputise Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot in coordinating the ruling coalition’s business in the House.
Standing Order 22 provides for the Senate Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Majority Whip and Deputy Majority Whip to be elected from among senators in the majority party. It also allows any of them to be removed by a majority vote of all the party’s senators.
Under Standing Order 22(7), the removal of the Majority Leader or the Deputy Majority Leader must be communicated to the Speaker in writing by the Majority Whip, together with the minutes of the meeting at which the decision was made. The Speaker must then verify the documents and announce the decision to the House within three sitting days.
