Hours after a deadly Russian missile strike on Kyiv that left at least 12 people dead, US President Donald Trump has voiced his disapproval, describing the attack as “very bad timing” and stating bluntly, “I am not happy.”

The strike, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called both “difficult” and “impudent,” has reignited international concern over the escalating war.

Speaking during a hastily curtailed visit to South Africa, Zelensky has urged the international community to apply “more pressure” on Russia in order to achieve a ceasefire.

Taking to social media, Trump has addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin directly with an urgent plea: “Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying.

Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!” His comments mark a notable shift in tone as he pushes for a resolution to the ongoing conflict, now in its third year.

However, tensions remain high. Only a day prior to condemning the strikes, Trump had accused Zelensky of hindering peace talks by refusing to recognise Russia’s control over Crimea—an issue that continues to be a major stumbling block in negotiations.

According to the BBC’s Frank Gardner, Trump’s warning to Putin may do little to prevent the situation in Ukraine from worsening further.
