Transparency International recently released its annual Corruption Perception Index report for 2023, detailing the most corrupt countries in the world.
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks 180 countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (least corrupt).
The global average score recorded by Transparency International is 43, indicating that over two-thirds of the countries scored below 50.
Transparency International described the global trend of weakening justice systems and lack of accountability for public officials as the main cause for corruption to thrive.

- Somalia
Somalia has again been ranked as the most corrupt country in the world with a corruption perception index score of 11 out of 100.
- Venezuela
This country has a corruption perception index score of 13 and is ranked the 2nd most corrupt country in the world.
- Syria
This Middle Eastern country has been ranked the 3rd most corrupt country in the world and has a corruption perception index of 13.
- South Sudan
This country has a corruption perception index score of 13, ranked 4th as the most corrupt country in the world.
- Yemen
The continuous state of war in Yemen has trapped the country in a cycle of corruption. The country has a corruption perception index score of 16, ranked 5th as the most corrupt country in the world.
- North Korea
This fragile state with an authoritarian regime has a corruption perception index score of 17 and is ranked 6th as the most corrupt country in the world.
- Nicaragua
Nicaragua has a corruption perception index score of 17, ranked 7th as the most corrupt country in the world.
- Haiti
Since 2020, this Caribbean country has been the site of an ongoing gang war between two major criminal groups and their allies. Haiti has a corruption perception index score of 17, ranked 8th as the most corrupt country in the world.
