Al-Nur Media Africa, the publisher of the Nairobi Law Monthly, has announced the creation of an annual prize that seeks to support judicial reform, integrity, competence and outstanding jurisprudential achievements by members of the Judiciary. According to a press statement released by the chairman of Al-Nur Media Africa, Ahmednasir Abdullahi SC, the annual award will be known as the “Nairobi Law Monthly Judge of the year Award”. It comes with a prize of Sh1 million.
The recipient of the award will be selected by a panel of eminent lawyers, to be chaired by Paul Muite SC, and which will include Ahmednasir Abdullahi SC, Eric Mutua, chairman of the Law society of Kenya, Pheroze Nowrojee SC, Betty Murungi, a human rights scholar, and Dennis Mosota, advocate. The recipient of the award will be under obligation to deliver a scholarly lecture on a legal topic of his/her choice which, in his/her opinion, has either shaped or has the potential of shaping the course of the law and politics of the country.
The recipient will be a judge who, in the course of the year, has shown through his/her rulings to be a judge of impeccable integrity. In addition, s/he will have demonstrated to be fiercely independent, be a jurist of a high standing and have an outstanding commitment to the application of the rule of law.
This is what Mr Ahmednassir had to say: “This award was created first to encourage excellence in the execution of judicial duty and, second, to recognise judges of outstanding integrity and competence. This is in recognition of the fact that there are many unsung heroes/heroines in the Judiciary.
“The award is also meant to create an atmosphere in which judges are put in the spotlight to allow members of the public to scrutinise their decisions. Lastly, it highlights not just the achievement of members of the judiciary, but also brings into focus the difficult, even hostile, political environment in which they operate,” he added.
