Bobi Wine, the main opposition figure in Uganda, was shot in the leg on Tuesday amidst chaos as security forces clashed with him in Bulindo, a northern suburb of Kampala.
The incident erupted as Wine, officially known as Robert Kyagulanyi, and his supporters faced off against police and military personnel in a violent scuffle.
The chaos started when Wine’s team tried to force their way through a street that was blocked by security forces.
Soon, the situation turned into a confrontation with shots and teargas flying around. In the commotion, Wine was hit by a bullet that caused him serious injuries.
The National Unity Platform (NUP), Wine’s party, reported the incident on X, stating, “Security operatives have made an attempt (on his life).” The party added, “He was shot in the leg and seriously injured.”
Disturbing video on social media shows Wine being assisted out of Najeem Medical Centre in the Bulindo neighbourhood, his left shin visibly bleeding as he grimaces in pain.
In response, the police issued a statement describing their version of events. They claimed that officers had attempted to stop Wine and his team from proceeding, which led to a confrontation.
“Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot,” the police said on X.
Wine’s aides described the incident in a post on his X account:
“Police and military surrounded our vehicles and started firing live bullets, teargas canisters and other projectiles. In the process, our president Bobi Wine, who was clearly targeted, was shot in the leg. He is currently being attended to by a team of medical doctors.”
This incident occurs against a backdrop of ongoing allegations against President Yoweri Museveni’s government for suppressing political dissent, claims which Museveni has consistently denied.
