The stage is set for the 2023 African Economic Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia between November 16 and 18.
The conference was first held in 2006, organised by the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), to discuss emerging economic challenges and opportunities that affect Africa.
This year’s conference will focus on the development of Africa’s industries. Themed, Imperatives for Sustainable Industrial Development in Africa, African leaders, among other delegates, will focus on the opportunities and challenges that Africa faces to boost green and sustainable industrialisation.
Geopolitical tensions and the pandemic, brought to light the inadequacies of African industries and the continent’s dependence on foreign manufacturers. For too long has Africa been dependent on assistance from overseas, it is why the continent was greatly affected by the disruption of the global supply chain during the periods, highlighting its weak integration into global value chains.
Africa has huge investment needs, with its infrastructure gap remaining a major challenge despite extensive investments over the years. Additional investment is neede to reduce the infrastructure gap and create an enabling environment for industrialization. A dynamic response to infrastructure and alternative energy needs to be created, as well as their guaranteed efficient management and maintenance.
Last year, the 2022 African Economic Conference was held in Mauritius with the theme of Supporting climate-responsive development in Africa. Unlike during its inception, the conference is now a major event for Africa, jointly organized by the African Development Bank, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
