The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced a new initiative to provide financial support to students pursuing courses in the maritime sector.
In a statement on June 17, HELB said the initiative targets students at the Bandari Maritime Academy and other maritime training institutions approved by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA).
According to the institution, applicants must be pursuing a craft certificate or diploma in nautical science and marine engineering to qualify for the loans.
“Maritime Education and Training Scheme (METS) offers financing to students pursuing courses in the Maritime Sector being offered at Bandari Maritime Academy and other Maritime Training Institutions (METI) approved by KMA,” HELB stated.
Additionally, they must be proficient in STCW Courses, and have certificates or diplomas in METI approved by KMA, or relevant sea experience. A CDC (Seafarers Discharge Record Book and Certificate)/Seamans book should also be attached.
The application process is done online through the HELB student portal on www.helb.co.ke. Applicants should log in and fill out the required form depending on whether they are pursuing an Academic, Proficiency or Competency course.
The form must be properly filled, signed, and stamped by the relevant authorities and guarantors. One copy of the application form with necessary documents should be submitted at the HELB Desk at the nearest Huduma Center or at Anniversary Towers.
The applicant should retain one copy of the duly filled loan application form.
The number of students who will be supported will depend on the availability of funds. HELB will use the email and telephone contacts provided on the loan application to reach out to the students.
