President William Ruto on Tuesday received the report detailing nominees for the positions of Chairperson and Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), marking a crucial step in the reconstitution of the electoral body.
The report, handed to the President at State House in Nairobi, follows a thorough vetting process conducted by the IEBC Selection Panel, led by Dr Nelson Makanda.
In a statement after receiving the report, President Ruto commended the panel for its diligent work throughout the recruitment process, acknowledging their commitment.
“Today morning, I received the report on the recruitment of nominees for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from the IEBC Selection Panel at State House, Nairobi,” he said.
Dr Ruto reiterated his dedication to following constitutional guidelines, assuring that the nominated candidates would be forwarded to the National Assembly for further vetting and approval.
“In accordance with the provisions of the IEBC Act, I will nominate and transmit the names to the National Assembly in full fidelity to the constitutional principles that guide our system of governance,” Ruto stated.
The President also highlighted the urgent need to restore the IEBC’s operational capacity, emphasising the commission’s critical role in ensuring the smooth running of the country’s democratic processes and electoral integrity.
“The restoration of a fully functional and credible electoral commission is essential to the consolidation of our democracy and the rule of law,” he said.
The delivery of the report follows a month-long interview process, which concluded on March 26. During this period, 11 candidates were assessed for the role of IEBC Chairperson.
Among the candidates interviewed were former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi, former Chairperson of the Constitution Implementation Commission Charles Nyachae, and a number of other distinguished individuals, including Saul Simiyu Wasilwa, Joy Mdivo, and Edward Katama Ngeywa.
