The Senate has agreed to hold a plenary session to hear the impeachment motion against Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo. The plenary is scheduled for July 8 to July 9. This follows the rejection of a motion to establish an 11-member committee to investigate the allegations.

“As communicated earlier by way of a message on the resolution of the Isiolo County Assembly, the Standing Orders provide that the Senate may constitute a committee to investigate the matter or conduct the same in plenary. The motion having been negatived, the route of a special committee is hereby abandoned. That means the Senate will investigate the same in plenary,” ruled Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

Governor Abdi Guyo was impeached on Thursday, June 26, after 16 out of 18 Isiolo County Assembly Members voted in favour of the motion.

The MCAs cited several reasons for his removal from office, including stalled development projects, mismanagement of county resources, and the creation of a bloated executive.

They claimed he appointed 36 advisors and 31 chief officers and fostered a climate of fear by offering short-term, two-year contracts to chief officers—this despite Isiolo having the third lowest revenue allocation nationally. The motion was tabled by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana.

The impeachment proceeds despite a High Court ruling in Meru on Friday, June 26, which declared the impeachment null and void—temporarily offering the governor a lifeline.
