Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County is undergoing final touches for its completion in readiness for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has confirmed.

Addressing the press on Wednesday at the stadium grounds after a National Steering Committee meeting, Dr. Omollo said the stadium is 96 percent complete in readiness for the fete.

“We are satisfied with the level of preparations that have gone into making sure that all those facilities are ready. We still have some work to do between now and then,” he said.

Dr. Omollo also confirmed that Matulo Airstrip in Webuye is also 96 percent complete, adding that a first test landing was recently done by the Air Force, who were satisfied with the state of the runway.

“Together with the National Steering Committee and Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, we have confirmed that the airstrip is complete and the final installation of the perimeter wall is on course,” he said.

Masinde Muliro Stadium, which has been under renovation since February, is set to accommodate 12,700 residents, with the VIP lounge able to hold 2,000 guests.

A garden party after the day’s celebrations will be hosted at the commissioner’s residence.

Regarding electricity supply in the stadium during the preparations and the celebrations, Dr. Omollo said that Kenya Power had deployed their officers and resources to ensure existing gaps are sealed, and where needed, electricity is made available.

“The work that is going on at the residence and the stadium is being done on a 24-hour basis,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Lusaka urged residents of the county to seize the opportunity to promote their businesses and other activities that will improve their livelihoods besides being responsible ambassadors of their county.
