Moi University has been closed indefinitely following a prolonged strike by lecturers and non-teaching staff.
In an internal memo dated October 3, 2024 signed by the Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac S. Kosgey, all students at the main campus and affiliated campuses were ordered to vacate university premises immediately.
It also directed all students residing in the university halls to vacate immediately; however, international students were asked to liaise with the dean of students for directions.
In the Memo, the vice chancellor said the University Senate in a special meeting held on Thursday, October 3, resolved to suspend all learning and teaching activities of the 1st semester 2024/2025 academic year following industrial action of staff and subsequent student unease.
“The University Council and Management are working to ensure the university operations resume as soon as possible,” said Prof Kosgey, adding that reopening days will be communicated in due course.

He thanked the students for their understanding and support in maintaining calm Academic programmes were disrupted due to the ongoing industrial action by the Lecturers.
The strike involving around 2000 lecturers joined by non-teaching staff affiliated to the Kenya University Staff Union, KUSU has been ongoing for the last four weeks.
University Academic Staff Union, UASU Secretary Ojuku Nyabuta while addressing the media in Eldoret declared that they would not relent until the university management listened to their concerns.
They accuse the University management of failing to implement the 2017/2022 collective bargaining agreement fully.
