A section of Kenya Kwanza Members of Parliament has rallied behind President William Ruto’s recent government appointments, praising the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and regional balance.
Speaking during an interdenominational fundraising event in Nandi Hills, the lawmakers commended the nomination of Dr Erastus Ethekon, a Turkana native, as the new chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Ethekon replaces Wafula Chebukati, who retired two years ago and passed away on February 20, 2025.
Leader of the Majority in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wa, defended the selection process, asserting that it strictly adhered to legal requirements.
He criticised opposition figures—particularly former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka—for politicising the appointments instead of focusing on the upcoming 2027 general elections.

MP Didmus Barasa emphasised that the process was consultative and transparent, while MP Mwengi Mutuse urged leaders to prioritise service delivery over political rivalry.
Mutuse noted that filling vacant IEBC positions is critical to enabling pending by-elections.
“Once Parliament approves the new commissioners, a schedule for mini-polls in affected constituencies and wards will be released. We have areas in urgent need of representation, both in the National Assembly and county assemblies,” he said.
The MPs reaffirmed their support for a non-tribal, inclusive approach to governance, stating that such efforts strengthen national unity and democratic participation.
