Ten students from Alliance High School have been arrested in connection with a fire that broke out at the institution’s mattress storage area on Thursday morning, as investigations into the incident continue.
Board of Management chairperson Sam Ncheeri confirmed the arrests, saying police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire and determine the role of the suspects.
The development comes shortly after the school was temporarily closed following the incident, which raised concern among parents and prompted internal reviews by the administration.
In a communication to parents dated June 4, the school principal said learners were not in immediate danger and continued with normal activities after the situation was contained.
“We wish to inform you that an incident involving a small section of mattresses in one of the older dormitory facilities occurred within the school. We are grateful to report that the situation was promptly contained and managed by the school administration and relevant teams,” read the message.

Following the incident, the Board of Management and school leadership held a meeting with parents to brief them on what had happened, outline safety measures taken, and address concerns raised by families.
After the briefing, parents were advised to take their sons home for the weekend to allow the institution time to conduct internal assessments and reinforce safety measures before reopening.
The school maintained that there was no cause for alarm, noting that students remained calm and under supervision throughout the incident. The temporary release of learners was described as a precautionary step aimed at ensuring their welfare.
“Most importantly, all students are safe, accounted for, and continuing with their normal morning activities and academic routines,” the school principal wrote in a message to parents.
The fire reportedly began around 4:00am in one of the boys’ dormitory sections. Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to contain the blaze before it spread further across the school.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and investigations remain ongoing as police assess damage and gather evidence related to the incident.
