The family of Rita Waeni Muendo, the 20-year-old victim of a gruesome murder in a Roysambu apartment, has revealed unsettling details about the events leading up to her tragic death. According to the family’s statement, the perpetrators demanded a ransom of Sh500,000 just hours after her mysterious disappearance.

Waeni, who had left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet a friend on Saturday, suddenly went missing. The family received a chilling message around 5 am on Sunday from Waeni’s phone number, demanding the hefty sum for her release within 24 hours.

Concerned for her safety, the family promptly reported the matter to the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), initiating an immediate investigation. Two more messages demanding the ransom were sent to the family, while Waeni’s whereabouts remained unknown.

Despite the family’s cooperation with authorities, they were unable to gather further details about the ransom or explore this distressing route. Tragically, Waeni’s lifeless body was discovered on Sunday, stuffed in a paper bag off Thika Road in Nairobi.

The police investigation revealed that Waeni had been brutally stabbed and chopped to death in an apartment along TRM Drive on Thika Road. To compound the horrifying nature of the crime, her head was severed, and it is still missing.

Even after Waeni’s murder, the family continued to receive additional ransom demands. These subsequent messages were promptly reported to the police and DCI detectives, deepening the complexity of the case.

Dr Lilian Mutea, the family spokesperson, expressed the family’s anguish, stating, “Additional two messages were sent to the family demanding the ransom. Unfortunately, the family did not get further details about the ransom or an opportunity to explore this route. Additionally, some demands were made when she had already been murdered.”

As the family grapples with the loss of their intelligent and vibrant daughter, they expressed gratitude for the support received during this devastating time. The family requested understanding and sensitivity as they mourn the untimely death of their beloved Waeni.
