Parliament is set to host President William Ruto for the 2024 State of the Nation address on Thursday.
The Head of State is expected to deliver his third State of the Nation address to Parliament on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
This is according to the speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula who made the communication to MPs last week.
“I wish to inform the House that I have received a message from His Excellency the President conveying that he intends to deliver the 2024 State of the Nation address to Parliament,” Wetang’ula said.
Speaker Wetang’ula further informed the House of a joint sitting to be held in the National Assembly.
“I wish to notify all Members that a joint sitting of the two Houses shall take place in the National Assembly on Thursday, 21st November 2024,” Speaker Wetang’ula pointed out.
The address by the President comes amidst increasing public pressure on the state of affairs in a number of sectors in the country including the economy, conduct of the police, corruption among other issues.
It also follows the recent impeachment of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagu and the swearing in of former interior cabinet secretary Kithure Kindiki as the new DP.
The State of the Nation address is delivered in accordance with Article 132 (1) of the Constitution which provides for the President to address a special sitting of Parliament once every year and may address Parliament at any other time.
“Once every year, the President is expected to report, in an address to the nation, on all the measures taken and the progress achieved in the realization of the national values, referred to in Article 10 and submit a report for debate to the National Assembly on the progress made in fulfilling the international obligations of the Republic,” states the Article.
The Head of State is further expected to submit a report for debate to the National Assembly on the progress made in fulfilling the international obligations of the Republic.
President Ruto is expected to, among other things, address measures taken to achieve national security and national values.
He is also expected to highlight achievements of his administration such as the roll out and uptake of the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) that replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
