The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has condemned the growing culture of intolerance against leaders following the heckling that took place during a presidential function in Embu on Saturday.

Not even the President was spared by hecklers as he made a case for the initiatives the government is putting in place to improve the lives of Kenyans, when he graced the ordination ceremony of Catholic Diocese of Embu Bishop Peter Kimani.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who is the UDA National Chair, strongly condemned the intolerance displayed during the church function, saying it was an act of a clearly orchestrated hooliganism.

Speaking on Sunday at St Peters ACK Mukangu in Embu North Sub-county during her thanksgiving ceremony, the Governor accused some leaders from the county of being the sponsors of a growing trend of political intolerance against leaders.

She said there are better ways of criticising the Government in civilised manner without resorting to such unbecoming behavior.

Governor Mbarire added that the uncouth behavior was unlike Embu people who she said are peace-loving and have always been respectful to others, in particular, leaders.

“Sisi si watu wa kuwa hatuna hata adabu mbele ya wageni, sisi ni watu wangwana, kwa hivyo muache kutupotosha, yule ambaye amechoka akae kando, sisi tuendelee na kazi (we have never been known to be a people who are discourteous to visitors, we are civilised hence stop misleading us; those who are demoralised should step aside and allows us to serve),” she said.

She affirmed that they are in the Kenya Kwanza Government to stay so that they can continue benefitting from its programmes and projects.

“Our duty is to support the Government, President Ruto and his Deputy Kithure Kindiki to ensure development is realised here in Embu,” she said, noting there is no benefit in being in the opposition.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar called on residents of Mt Kenya East to rally behind DP Kindiki whose political star was on the rise.

“This is a golden chance that has been accorded to you and it is upon you to support and mold him to be able to take up after President Ruto is done,” he stated.

He said he was confident that Government meant well for Kenyans and will be able to meet their aspirations in the remaining period of its first term.

Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi and Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku said they will continue supporting the government in delivering its pledges for the remaining three years.
