At least six school-going children were killed on Friday morning in a road accident at Wiitu shopping centre on the Kitui-Kibwezi road.

The victims, according to Ikitha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Loctary Lomachary, included three primary school children and three from secondary school.

Lomachary said the incident happened at about 6.20 am as the children were crossing to their school.

The six included three pupils at Kyaoni Primary and three from Kyaoni Secondary.

Lomachary said the learners were knocked down by a Probox salon car while crossing the road.

He said preliminary findings show the car was speeding at the time of the accident. He termed the incident tragic.

The driver of the vehicle is said to have fled the scene before later surrendering himself to Mutomo Police Station.

“The three students died on the spot and police are handling the matter,” Lomachary said.

According to the deputy county commissioner, the learners were knocked down by a Probox vehicle while crossing the road.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene before later surrendering himself to Mutomo Police Station.

He has since been arrested and the vehicle impounded as investigations into the incident continue.

Elsewhere, four other people died while three were rescued after a sewerage line collapsed in Shauri Moyo, in Nairobi.

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango who confirmed the Friday morning incident, said that search for other people trapped in the collapsed sewerage line was underway.
