The Kenyan Judiciary, an independent arm of government, has operationalised the Small Claims Courts (SCCs), governed by the Small Claims Court Act, 2016.
These courts were created to ease access to justice and are tasked with resolving civil and commercial disputes valued at up to Sh1 million through a simplified, cost-effective process.
Each case is expected to be concluded within 60 working days of filing, ensuring prompt resolution of minor financial claims.
Currently, 37 Small Claims Courts operate in major towns across the country, but not all of Kenya’s 47 counties are covered. The Judiciary is working to establish additional courts to bridge this gap.
