Tottenham Hotspur have won the Europa League after beating Premier League rivals Manchester United 1-0 in the final.
Brennan Johnson’s goal in the 42nd minute secured the win for Spurs and a spot in next season’s Champions League, which is set to bring the North London club a £100m windfall. The Welsh winger bundled in a loose ball from close range after a cross by Pape Matar Sarr deflected off Luke Shaw and Johnson himself before creeping past United keeper Andre Onana.
Ange Postecoglou’s claim earlier in the campaign that he always wins trophies in his second season has been vindicated. Whether this is enough for him to retain his role as Spurs manager remains uncertain, but the club will be playing in the Champions League next season.
“I can’t explain it, I am so happy right now. This season has not been good, but this is what it’s all about. The fans, the players get battered for not winning anything, and we’ve got it done,” Tottenham goalscorer Brennan Johnson told TNT Sport.
The closest Ruben Amorim’s side came to a goal was through a Rasmus Højlund header, which was superbly cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven, who stood tall as Spurs clinched the trophy.
It was a match between two teams languishing in 16th and 17th place in the Premier League. Played at high intensity but with low confidence, the prize on the line was so big that it seemed to overawe both teams. There were numerous turnovers, with neither side able to keep possession easily. Moves often ended in panicked defending, balls being thumped to safety, or a series of clumsy fouls.
