Transparency International recently released its annual Corruption Perception Index (CPI) report for 2023, which details the most corrupt countries in Africa. The CPI is a composite index—a combination of polls—drawing on corruption-related data collected by a variety of reputable institutions. It ranks 180 countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sectors are perceived to be, reflecting the views of observers from around the world. Below are the top 30 most corrupt countries in Africa based on the report.

South Sudan has a corruption perception index score of 13 and is ranked the 2nd most corrupt country in Africa.

Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea has been ranked the 3rd most corrupt country in Africa with a corruption perception index of 17.

Libya

Libya has a corruption perception index score of 18 and is ranked the 4th most corrupt country in Africa.

Sudan

Sudan has a corruption perception index score of 20 and is ranked the 5th most corrupt country in Africa.

Democratic Republic of Congo

DRC has a corruption perception index score of 20 and is ranked the 6th most corrupt country in Africa.

Comoros

Comoros has a corruption perception index score of 20 and is ranked the 7th most corrupt country in Africa.

Chad

Chad has a corruption perception index score of 20 and is ranked the 8th most corrupt country in Africa.

Burundi

Burundi has a corruption perception index score of 20 and is ranked the 9th most corrupt country in Africa.

Eritrea

Eritrea has a corruption perception index score of 21 and is ranked the 10th most corrupt country in Africa.

Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau has a corruption perception index score of 22 and is ranked the 11th most corrupt country in Africa.

Congo

Congo has a corruption perception index score of 22 and is ranked the 12th most corrupt country in Africa.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has a corruption perception index score of 24 and is ranked the 13th most corrupt country in Africa.

Central African Republic

Central African Republic has a corruption perception index score of 24, making it the 14th most corrupt country in Africa.

Nigeria

Nigeria has a corruption perception index score of 25, making it the 15th most corrupt country in Africa.

Mozambique

Mozambique has a corruption perception index score of 25, ranking it the 16th most corrupt country in Africa.

Madagascar

Madagascar has a corruption perception index score of 25, ranking it the 17th most corrupt country in Africa.

Liberia

Liberia has a corruption perception index score of 25, making it the 18th most corrupt country in Africa.

Djibouti has a corruption perception index score of 30 and is ranked the 24th most corrupt country in Africa.

Togo

Togo has a corruption perception index score of 31 and is ranked the 25th most corrupt country in Africa.

Kenya

Kenya has a corruption perception index score of 31 and is ranked the 26th most corrupt country in Africa.

Niger

Niger has a corruption perception index score of 32 and is ranked the 27th most corrupt country in Africa.

Angola

Angola has a corruption perception index score of 33 and is ranked the 28th most corrupt country in Africa.

Malawi

Malawi has a corruption perception index score of 34 and is ranked the 29th most corrupt country in Africa.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has been ranked the 30th most corrupt country in Africa with a corruption perception index of 35.
