The plans to impeach deputy president Rigathi Gachagua took a new twist on Monday after Tana River senator Danson Mungatana filed a censure motion against the DP at the Senate.
Mungatana, in his motion, wants the conduct of the DP to be discussed by the Senate over allegations that Gachagua had carried himself in a manner that does not befit the stature of the office that he holds.
The senator accuses Gachagua of what he terms as the DP’s “regional focus” on his endeavours, despite holding the office of a deputy president within the presidency which he says should serve all Kenyans.
The motion, which has since been filed with the Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi, is expected to involve members expressing strong opinion of disapproval against the targeted individual.
And if approved, lawmakers will then discuss the conduct of the accused person, here being Mr Gachagua, in the plenary of the Senate. The motion, however, is not an impeachment motion against the DP.
“I have today September 23, 2024, filed a motion of censure against the holder of office of the Deputy President because of conduct unbecoming of that office,” Mr Mungatana said at a press conference at Parliament Buildings on Monday.
“This is a censure motion which I have filed with the office of Senate speaker. Once approved, it shall be tabled in the House, and the senators will debate the censure motion against the DP,” he added.

The senator said the censure motion will strongly show disapproval with the conduct of Mr Gachagua whom he accused of behaving as if he is the deputy president of Mt Kenya region.
“We must remind him that he is the DP for Kenya and not one region. I and the people of Tana River are aggrieved in the manner the DP has been conducting himself,” Mr Mungatana said.
“What happened to the oath of office that the DP took? He is only fighting for one region. I think the Senate is the right place to censure the DP,” he added.
The filing of the motion comes just hours after the DP accused individuals close to the President of plotting a motion to remove him from office through impeachment.
Speaking during a church service in Thika town on Sunday, Mr Gachagua implored President Ruto to reject the impeachment plans, adding that such a move would isolate the Head of State from his supporters in the Mt Kenya region.
“To my boss, President William Ruto, be cautious and do the right thing. Let us not re-introduce the politics of betrayal. Our people hate betrayal and we are very unforgiving when betrayed,” Gachagua said.
“There is no need for impeachment, instead, priority should be given to serving Kenyans. I want to tell my boss to be cautious and avoid people who are inciting him,” he added.
