Kenyan U20 football sensation Aldrine Kibet has signed a four-year deal with Spanish La Liga side RC Celta Vigo, the club has confirmed.
In a transfer reportedly worth €6 million (Sh900 million), the attacking midfielder will initially join Celta Fortuna, the club’s ambitious reserve team, as part of a development pathway aimed at fast-tracking him to the senior squad.
Kibet’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. He first captured national attention in the 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) finals, where he captained St. Anthony’s Boys High School to the national title, finishing the tournament as both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Golden Boot winner. Over the season, he recorded an astonishing 25 goals and 27 assists.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris hailed the transfer as a major milestone for the 18-year-old midfielder, calling it a moment that marks his transition “from local hero to a rising force on the global stage.”
His father, Christopher Komen, had earlier confirmed they were in Spain to finalise the deal. “Good evening, we are in Celta Vigo. We will sign tomorrow, if all goes well,” he told Nation Sport on Monday night.
Many Kenyans have since taken to social media to celebrate the teenager’s historic move. Sports journalist Ole Teya described Kibet as a “local icon” in Kitale.
Celta Vigo are on the verge of winning hearts in Baringo and Kitale with Aldrine Kibet’s signing. Kibet may have arrived in Kitale as just a student, but he’s now a local icon—his presence alone is enough to bring business to a standstill, said Teya.
Following his impressive KSSSA performance, Kibet joined Nastic Sports Academy in September 2023—a youth development outfit affiliated with Gimnàstic de Tarragona in Spain. His performances there further paved the way for his move to Celta Vigo.
RC Celta Vigo, founded in 1923, competes in Spain’s top-flight division, La Liga. Known for its passionate fanbase and strong community ties, the team finished seventh last season with 55 points—securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
