While on a tour to Nyanza, Ruto launched various projects, including those touching on infrastructure, agriculture, trade, and marine transport.
The recently concluded four-day tour of the Nyanza region by President William Ruto brought with it a bag of goodies for the residents, a move that the government says is set to transform a region mainly considered an opposition stronghold.
While on a tour to Nyanza, Ruto launched various projects, including those touching on infrastructure, agriculture, trade, and marine transport.
The unveiling of the projects by the President presents a new frontier for development in the area with a promise to transform the lives of residents.
Key among these projects included the flagging off of MV Uhuru II – a vessel with a carrying capacity of 1063 tonnes and fitted with a cruising speed of 14 knots.
The MV Uhuru II project, commissioned by former President Kenyatta, is expected to revolutionise water transport in the region, linking Kenya to its neighbouring countries of Uganda, Tanzania, and many others through the Kisumu port.
The President’s tour also focused on developing infrastructure projects to stimulate the region’s economic growth.
In Kisumu, the President also commissioned the Lake Basin Mall, the Kabonyo-Kanyagwal Fish Processing Plant, and the Koru-Bible College Road construction.
In Siaya County, the Head of State commissioned the Bondo-Lihunda Road, a digital laboratory at Mahaya TVC in Rarieda, and the groundbreaking of a Level 4 Hospital in Ugenya.
Ruto also commissioned various projects in Homa Bay county, including the launch of the Mfangano ring road, the launch of the construction of Sindo-Magunga Road, and the launch of the rehabilitation works of Homa Bay Pier.
Later, he launched the Last Mile Water Connectivity Project in Migori County and the affordable housing project at Mareba Kuria West.
President Ruto noted that the Nyanza region will lead in advancing the Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda.
To achieve this, Ruto said that the government is set to invest in irrigation, revamping and building ports and 10 landing sites, and reviving sugar companies, among other regional programs.
At the Kisumu Shipyard, President Ruto commissioned MV Uhuru II, a vessel with a carrying capacity of 1063 tonnes and fitted with a cruising speed of 14 knots.
While launching the MV Uhuru II project, Ruto argued that placing Lake Victoria as a geostrategic resource was vital in expanding trade and relationships across the East African region and beyond.
The project, he said, will also be important in reducing trade costs and enhancing integration in East Africa.
“The investments we are making in it will elevate the lake’s profile as a maritime transport of choice and help exploit its huge untapped economic potential,” Ruto said.
In Usenge, Siaya County, the Head of State inspected the Dhogoye Bridge, which is expected to connect Siaya and Busia and enhance regional trade.
“This bridge will ensure quick, safe, and cheap movement of goods and people,” the President said.
President Ruto also launched the upgrading to bitumen standards of Bondo – Uyawi – Kibanga – Liunda Beach road in Liunda, Siaya County.
He said the road enhances local economic activities in the region by facilitating faster transportation of fish and other goods to markets.
“Improved accessibility is poised to stimulate economic development and transform the socio-economic landscape of the region,” he said.
