Silas Apollo, a political reporter with The Nairobi Law Monthly, has died after being involved in a road accident on Kiambu Road, police have confirmed.
Apollo, 35, was hit by a speeding motorcycle on the night of Wednesday, 9 April, while attempting to cross the busy road on foot.
He was initially rushed to St. Teresa’s Hospital before being transferred to Kiambu Level 6 Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His identity was not immediately known, as he was not carrying any identification documents at the time. The incident was initially recorded by police as “unknown person hit by unknown vehicle.”
Apollo’s family only learned of his death on Saturday, 12 April, after a relative, concerned by his unusual silence, called his phone. The call was answered by an officer at Kiambu Police Station, who confirmed the fatal accident.
Apollo joined The Nairobi Law Monthly in February 2023 after leaving Nation Media Group. He has been in the industry for more than a decade and has made a name for himself as a serious investigator of important issues, and also a very calm person in the newsroom.
Colleagues at the NLM described him as humble, principled, and dedicated to his craft.
“This is a difficult loss, and I know it has affected many of us,” said Ruqaiah Almeri, General Manager of The Nairobi Law Monthly. “Silas was a valued member of our team and his absence will be felt. My deepest condolences to us all and his family.”
Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Apollo is survived by his family and colleagues. He leaves behind not just stories he wrote, but stories he inspired.
Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by the family and will be communicated in due course.
In our newsroom, Silas’s desk is empty now, but his presence remains—in the pages he helped fill, and in the lives he touched.
Farewell, Silas.
