PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray, who won his second title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, has died, just a day after pulling out of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, as reported by PGA Tour officials.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
“We were devastated to learn—and are heartbroken to share—that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner, said in a statement on Saturday.
Murray, 30, withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge with two holes left to play in the second round on Friday, citing an undisclosed illness.
“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Monahan said.
“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”
In a statement to CNN, Murray’s agent, Kevin Canning, said he was saddened by the loss of the golfer, a longstanding member of the GSE marketing agency family.
“Hearing the news this morning shocked all of us,” he said.
Murray openly discussed the challenges he faced in his golf career, including battles with alcoholism. In an interview with the PGA, he disclosed his time in rehab and ongoing struggles with anxiety.
The deceased showed great talent early, winning three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships and ranking as the top golfer in his age group.
At 16, he made a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour, the second-youngest ever to do so.
After attending Wake Forest, East Carolina, and Arizona State, he found a sponsor exemption in 2016, leading to top-10 finishes at the Rex Hospital Open and BMW Charity Pro-Am and a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship.
This earned him a PGA TOUR card for the 2016–17 season.
As a rookie, Murray won the 2017 Barbasol Championship, securing a two-year exemption and finishing 66th in the FedExCup.
After struggling in the following seasons, he won two events on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023, earning a PGA TOUR return.
He began the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii, reaching 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
