The position fell vacant after the retirement of Anne Amadi on January 12, 2024. At least 43 candidates applied for the position, with seven being shortlisted for interviews, which took place on Monday March 18, 2024.

“Following deliberations and careful consideration of the candidates based on merit, performance and suitability for the position, the JSC has appointed Mokaya Frida Boyani as the chief registrar of the Judiciary for a five-year term,” CJ Koome said in a statement.

On October 20, 2023, the position of the registrar of the judiciary was announced ahead of the interviews, which were held on Monday.

Prior to her current appointment, Mokaya held the position of registrar at the JSC since 2012. With over 27 years of experience in the legal field, she began her career in 1997 within the Judiciary, initially serving as a district magistrate.

“As the chief registrar, Mokaya will serve as the chief administrator and accounting officer of the Judiciary. She will also be the secretary of the JSC as well as the secretary to the National Council on Administration of Justice,” Koome said.

Ms Mokaya was picked from a pool of seven candidates, who included the chief of staff in the office of the CJ Rose Macharia Wachuka, National Council of Law Reporting chief executive officer, Ouma Jack Busalile, Federation of Women Lawyers director, Anne Wambeti Ireri, and the deputy chief registrar of the Judiciary Paul Ndemo Maina.

Others were senior principal magistrate Caroline Kendagor Jepyegen and the registrar of the eomployment and labour relations court, Kennedy Kandet Lenkamai.
